Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Learning to Fly

Tom Petty died just around the time I posted my last/first/other post, so I kind of feel I have to put this here. I can't really say much about Tom Petty, other than I have always felt that as an artist he was deserving of more of my time than I gave him. He seems to be a pretty straight up guy, too. His music will live on, which is all one can ask for, really, I suppose.

He died at the same time as a madman shot and killed 59 people in Las Vegas, injuring over 500 in the process. These numbers are getting dangerously surreal, where a normal, sane person simply can't comprehend the scale. Nearly 600 casualties, all caused by one man (and I'm pretty sure the fact that it was a man is significant)! The Catalan Independence referendum and the overreaction of the Spanish government are also in the news today, as is the UK's governing Conservative Party's conference, and the Irish right wing reaction to last weekend's march to repeal the 8th Amendment, which forces women to carry pregnancies to term, regardless of the health of the mother or even the baby. Since 2016 I've been saying it, if the End of Days is just around the corner, there are times when all you can do is shrug, and say "fair enough, we had a good run!" Humans do seem to have a talent for ruining things for themselves. At least as a race we also produced the Pyramids, the Sistine Chapel, East of Eden, and Learning to Fly along the way!
